NEW YORK, NEW YORK but first

The demographic of this vessel, and perhaps on many of the more traditional cruise lines, is certainly older than the general population. Many of the guests have waited so long to cruise that they are often unwell and/or with limited mobility.

As we were approaching Canada (the Maritime Provinces), we made a detour to allow a guest to be evacuated.

The Canadian Coast Guard sent an emergency helicopter - Medevac helicopter -from Nova Scotia, which refueled in Labrador and met the vessel at sea, in a heavy storm.  These helicopters are fitted with the equipment necessary to stabilize or keep the patient stabilized until brought to a hospital.

In 2020, there were at least 5 occasions when either the ship returned to land (or close to land) or a helicopter came out, almost always at night and usually in heavy weather.

But, I am glad that such a service exists because I know of at least one guest (a friend) whose life was saved by this service.
