Madeira is a popular year-round tourist
destination, famous for wine, flowers and embroidery as well as
spectacular New Year's Eve celebrations featuring an incredible
fireworks display. The natural geological features of Funchal, the
capital city, mean that it is in an “amphitheater” which begins
at the harbor – Porto de Funchal – and rises almost 1,200 m on
gentle slopes.
The name “Funchal” seems to come
from the Portuguese word “funcho”, fennel, because of the
abundance of fennel found there by the first settlers.

Tiles from the city hall which pay homage to Madeira embroidery and the many, mostly women who still practice the art.
